The Brachycephalic breeds have this pink elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about.  They are Brachycephalic breed (flat face) that may have a breathing problem.
We have spent a lot of time with Dr Ross at Colonial Hospital in Ithaca NY.  He has done many surgeries to shorten the soft palate including opening the dogs nares (Nostrils) and in some
extreme cases, removed the dogs tonsils and saccules.
Since it is not feasible to think we can breed this out of the Pug or French Bulldog, we are realistic in educating anyone that buys our dogs.
We suggest they be evaluated at the time of spay or neuter, when they are under anesthesia.  Have the soft palate evaluated. If any corrections need to be made, they can do so at that time.
Most pugs and Frenchies are okay and do not require surgery, however when you have a puppy you should be aware of the health risks and have a solution.
We are available to discuss this with anyone that has a concern.

Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKDef)

Erythrocyte Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PK Deficiency) is an inherited hemolytic anemia caused by insufficient activity of this regulatory enzyme which results in instability and loss of red blood cells. The anemia is intermittent, the age of onset is variable and clinical signs are also variable.

Susceptibility to Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE)

Susceptibility to Pug Dog Encephalitis (PDE) Approximately 1.2% of Pug dogs die of necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), also known as Pug dog encephalitis (PDE). NME is an inflammatory disease of the central nervous system that is usually progressive and fatal. Symptoms of NME include seizures, depression, ataxia, abnormal gait and blindness.
